Quality living requires mind, body, and spirit.
Why it matters:
Two weeks ago we discussed the concept of healthspan. Last week we looked at conditions that frequently cause our demise. When we turn to look at quality of life, 3 categories of problems are with particular attention:
- Problems with the body. Deterioration in our musculoskeletal system - arthritis, back/neck pain, fractures related to osteoporosis, falls/balance problems - all may cause significant pain and suffering. Additionally, fatigue (the #1 most frequent complaint leading to doctor visits) can arise as the body loses proper function.
Problems with the mind. Cognitive issues are common as we age, and include mild memory impairment and loss of concentrating ability ranging up to full-blown dementia.
Problems with the spirit. Anxiety, depression, lack of quality relationships, and loneliness are rampant in our society and are a leading contributor to reductions in quality of life.
What you can do:
Stay tuned! The good news is there are proactive strategies you can use to maintain your quality of life and address potential problems early. We will begin looking at the high-level concepts and strategies starting next week. Of course, Sarah and I are always delighted to address your individual circumstances and risk profile when we see you in clinic.
Have a wonderful week,
Dr. Topher Fox
